The year is 1897 and a train carrying a vicious murderer to his trial crashes east of London. Amid the confusion, death and injuries the killer escapes. Was this his good fortune or had his criminal associates caused the crash?
By coincidence his sister Polly is also on the train. She is innocent of any crime, but finds herself unable to resist the temptation to assume the identity of a wealthy young woman who has been killed in the crash. Her deception is discovered by artist and detective Archie Price but he understands her fear of her degenerate brother and respects her secret. Both injured, Polly and Arxhie are taken to a nearby country house where they are discovered by the criminal gang, including Polly’s brother. Both Archie’s artistic talent and Polly’s photographic skills are called upon to help them survive.
Just as they start to feel in control of their destiny, a wealthy and powerful local sadist hires the gang to provide Polly as his next victim.
In this book the author shares her knowledge of the life and attitudes of the final decade of 19th century England. Her characters are well realized, especially Polly and her struggle to become an independent and respected woman with a career in photography.
Blatant evil faces an apparently naïve innocence throughout the book but the author shows us how friendship, creativity and a sometimes surprising goodness can prevail. The author also shows us all levels of the society of the time - from the criminal underbelly to the gentleman farmer, gypsies and the wealthy. At all levels innocence can be real or merely an illusion.

The Illusion of Innocence Archie Price Mystery Jacqueline Jacques 9781909983373 Books Reviews

In this second novel about affable, generous Archie Price, Jacqueline Jacques takes state of the art 1890s – where trains travel at 40mph and photography and science are beginning to make their mark in police procedures – and spins a tale of abuse and money that could belong to the 21st century. Fast-paced and punchy, there is plenty of scope for another story to follow. (I’d wondered how the author would manage to give Archie a happy marriage as well as leave him open to romantic possibility and the answer is entirely credible.)
This story opens up in 1897 in a rural area near London, in the middle of a crime taking place … one that will end the life of Jeremiah Fitzell, an elderly man, who was viewing his collection of hundreds of antiquated porn postcards. It was the photos that Freddy was seeking. After stabbing Jeremiah, he virtually ripped the box out of the dead man’s hands. Having eyed something suspicious, Constable Tomkins was waiting for the burglar to make his escape. But Freddy took care of him too, leaving him for dead. Tomkins doesn’t die though and was able to provide Archie with a rather detailed description of the man. Archie, a sketch artist for the police, was able to draw a very good likeness of the man now wanted for murder.

Then, the reader meets Freddy’s sister, Polly. They couldn’t be any more different. Her family had felt sorry for Freddy when he was only a child and adopted him. They were never able to bring out the good in Freddy, who even now continued to dominate and terrorize Polly. But, Polly is made of much stronger fiber. She can’t be kept down; she’ll continue to fight. Her father had taught them both about photography and it had become Polly’s line of work.

The flow and pacing of this novel were wonderfully done. I loved the hint of romance between Archie and Polly. I enjoyed that Polly continued to be such a strong character knowing how dangerous her brother could be. Early, Freddy is arrested but the story is far from over as he manages to escape during the derailment of his train ride to Chelmford for his trial. Both Archie and Polly are aboard the train. The author is new to me, but I’m quite sure this won’t be the last book I read by Jacqueline Jacques. Illusion of Innocence is a sequel to The Colours of Corruption, but stood on its own quite well. Rating 4 out of 5.
